In my weekly newspaper column, ‘Ask Deb Nelson’, I get a lot of questions about kitchens. I think people ask about kitchens because renovations tend to be expensive and time consuming, so many people look for simple ways to update the space. The trend towards open shelving creates a casual, relaxed look in the kitchen, but it isn’t for everyone. The idea is to keep the shelves organized and uncluttered. Like the image above the shelves can look amazing with the right assortment of display items.
If you’re considering open shelves, the ones shown in the kitchen above in white are quite simple to make. You can purchase white brackets like these shown below as the support for each shelf. Then you can make customized wooden shelves to fit your area and paint them white. This is quite an inexpensive option for a new kitchen display area.
A few other affordable kitchen updates would be new hardware, or add a bright rug on the floor or a new light fixture. I love the look of the one below in matte black, what a great statement piece this would be in a white kitchen!
