Deb Nelson Design Why I Love a White Room

Why I love a white room

Deborah Nelson October 23, 2019

You’ve probably noticed by now that I decorate a lot of my spaces with white paint! This week I wanted to share a few reasons on why I’m such a huge fan of it and why it continues to excite me.

It brings artwork, furniture and accent pieces to the forefront

If you’ve spent money investing in quality pieces or found some of your favourite antique treasures, chances are you want to highlight them. A bright and neutral background is the perfect backdrop to really let them shine. A neutral shade allows everything else to pop, it makes various textures and textiles stand out and be the centre attraction of your room. I love that all these elements help to build a layered look to your space.

It’s calm and relaxing while giving you so much flexibility

With white walls, it becomes so easy to change the palette of a room. White works with every colour on the spectrum, so it really allows you to mix in whatever colour you’re feeling at the moment or freshen up your rooms from season to season. You can keep a space feeling new and fresh just by swapping a few accent colours in and out.

It’s far from boring

From warm whites to cool ones, there are so many shades to choose from. Undertones can make choosing a white paint tricky (whether you’re looking for something creamier or even something with a bit of a coloured tint) but that’s part of the fun and it really contributes to the overall vibe. A starker white feels very modern, while a soft, creamier white is beautiful when designing a warm space. Those subtle undertones can make big differences, and sheen levels can dramatically change the look too. From flat matte to glossy, you get a completely different look so there are plenty of ways to never get tired of this ultra-versatile colour.

Maintenance is easy

If you paint multiple rooms through your home in the same shade, it makes touch ups and paint storage so much easier. If you’ve got a few nicks that you need to touch up, you only need to reach for the one paint can, rather than sort through a variety of colours to find the right one.

It’s the most affordable way to transform a room

When it comes to dramatically changing the look of a space, you can’t beat the price of a can of paint. Especially in older and more dated homes, painting walls a crisp shade of white instantly brightens things up and feels much more modern. I love it so much that I’ve even done all four walls, the ceiling and the floor in white. I was thrilled with how white paint transformed this bedroom in one of my old attics, which was previously an unfinished space with knotty pine from floor to ceiling.

While I do also enjoy painting rooms with colour too (you can see a moody Navy space I pulled together for CBC here), white continues to be a favourite of mine and I certainly don’t see that changing anytime soon!

I used a variety of antiques in this guest room - the bed, chair, blanket and artwork were all items I've collected over time. I love how they add so much character to a room, the antique charcoal sketch above the bed is dated from the 1800’s
