COLOUR

Deborah Nelson February 15, 2016

In much of my own personal decor I like to stick with neutral colours on walls and large furnishings. I’ve always preferred layered neutrals and adding in pops of colour in accents like rugs, artwork and pillows. In an entry area a bright runner can ...

ASK DEB NELSON: ADDING COLOUR

Deborah Nelson October 28, 2015

In my column, Ask Deb Nelson, I was asked about how to add colour to a room. I personally gravitate toward neutral, layered spaces. But I do like to add some colour and pattern in a room, for example in the picture shown above, I ...

ASK DEB NELSON: WHAT DO I PUT ON MY COFFEE TABLE?

Deborah Nelson October 9, 2015

One thing I love experimenting with is a coffee table display. Like mantels and bookcases, your coffee table can have an attractive, stylish display of items. I tend to change my around a lot – but typically always have a plant or flowers (especially in the summer depending on what I pick from the garden) and a stack of books. Other items that can work are candles, a tray is always nice to help 'ground' the items and other small decorative objects. Strangely I often seem to have one natural item – a large rock, drift wood, sea shell, a pinecone or antlers. It's a place you can easily try a number of items until you find the look you like.  Here are a few of mine over the years.

DESIGN INSPIRATION: USING UNIQUE ACCESSORIES

Deborah Nelson October 8, 2015

One thing I love about decorating is adding lots of unique, antique accessories. I have many interesting old things around my house! I rotate things around from tables, shelves and mantels. People are always interested in the story...where the items came from and how old ...

DEB'S TOP THREE: BRASS TABLE LAMPS

Deborah Nelson September 26, 2015

These days brass/gold table lamps are everywhere I turn! The beautiful lamp above is from SchoolHouseElectric, made in Oregon. I like the style of these lamps and I think they would work best as a desk lamp or hall table lighting. I've been reading a lot about the version from Target (below) because it's very affordable.

Here is the Target version that's getting a lot buzz:

Then there is this cute version from West Elm, also affordable:

And again, the SchoolHouseElectric, which is a little bit pricier:

If I get one, I'd put here, on the desk and I think it will look great!

Starting to get into the Christmas spirit to be ready for the @ywcahalifax Homes for the Holidays happening November 22-24! A bit of a natural holiday vibe from my place a few seasons back. This year I'll have it decked a little bit more! 🎄🎄🎄 📷:

Lots more of this extensive renovation to show over the coming months! A quick shot I snapped of my Chester kitchen which has been drastically transformed since the beginning. Swipe over to see the before shot! #debnelsondesign #kitchenrenovation #
I used a variety of antiques in this guest room - the bed, chair, blanket and artwork were all items I've collected over time. I love how they add so much character to a room, the antique charcoal sketch above the bed is dated from the 1800’s
