INSPIRATION: SHADES OF BLUE

Jordan July 24, 2015

One of my favourite colours is blue and I love the range of blue shades from the very pale blues to a brighter, deeper turquoise and navy. Even in small doses like the image above, a bit of blue is a great accent.

Here are a few other blues I love:

Navy blue grass cloth: recently used in a clients living room and I love how this turned out!

I’ve also used a very light blue linen on a sofa and have to say it’s a beautiful look.

This wall painted with two Farrow & Ball colours really works, it’s a combo of pitch blue and lulworth blue.

The vintage Indian dhurrie area rug by Madeline Weinrib is still a personal favourite. I love the look of faded blue rugs.

OUTDOOR RUG FOR A BOATHOUSE ON THE SEA

Deborah Nelson February 20, 2015

One project I'm working on is a beautiful boat house right on the Atlantic Ocean. The space is part of a large dock and will be well used by boaters, swimmers and those looking for some breathtaking scenery while lounging. The views are incredible! I'm doing a slipcovered sofa in a blue outdoor fabric, this will help with the wear & tear, it can with stand the salt water and can be taken off at the end of the season to be cleaned.

On the floor we'll go with a gorgeous outdoor rug. Here are a couple of outdoor rugs I'm considering from Capel Rugs (we sell this line if you're interested – get in touch). Can't wait to see this one all come together!

FABRICS WITH A TOUCH OF 2015 PANTONE COLOUR MARSALA

Deborah Nelson January 22, 2015

I love fabrics and in my job I get to see some beautiful options. I love putting together patterns and  there are endless colours, styles and patterns – so it's a fun part of my day when I get to start putting together ideas for a client. I'm enjoying the Global trend in fabrics, these tend to have an artisan feel – like a hand-woven look – in distinct colours and patterns. Here are a few from Kravet that show this look (which we sell). I'd envision fabrics like these made in toss pillows on a neutral linen sofa. They also happen to have a touch of the 2015 Pantone colour – Marsala.

ASK DEB NELSON: FURNITURE WITH SLIPCOVERS

Deborah Nelson October 30, 2014

Often people ask me about the best style or colour of furniture for their home. It can be different in every situation, but as many people know, I'm a big fan of slipcovered furniture. I have a sofa, (that you can see above in a white slipcover), but I have several other covers to completely change the look of the piece. I have different colours, fabrics and styles – so depending on the time of year or look I want, I just change the slipcover. I really like slipcovers for a couple of reasons; first they offer you tons of versatility – you don't have to buy a new sofa when you want a completely different look. Also they are really easy to clean, when people say they can't have white furniture, a machine washable white slipcover can really open up a lot of options. You don't have these cleaning choices with an upholstered piece of furniture. If you're looking for a sofa, consider something that is slipcovered if you want something to change up from time to time.

People also ask where to get slipcovers and there are two options. You can buy a sofa that comes with a fitted cover and perhaps buy a cover in more than one fabric or colour, like the Ikea option below. The other option is to buy a sofa that has loose cushions (ie. removable) so you could have a slipcover made for the sofa and all the cushions. This is a more expensive option, you need to buy the slipcover fabric and find an expert to do the work.

Here are a few sofas options.

1.  The Geoffrey from Montauk sofa, these are beautiful, custom made, down filled sofas. They will make the slipcover and you have tons of fabric options.

2.  An Ektorp sofa from Ikea. This is very affordable, so you could consider buying a couple of covers in different colours.

3.  An option for a small sofa from Bouclair for less than $1000

TOP 3 PICKS FOR LINEN FABRIC

Deborah Nelson October 24, 2014

I use a lot of natural linen with clients and in my own home, often it's Belgian linen. I like 100% linen for drapery, roman shades, slipcovers, bedding and pillows. In the picture above you can catch a bit of the detail in the roman shades on the windows on either side of the fireplace. These were custom made in a very light linen fabric and I had a slightly darker linen band added for contrast. People often ask where to get linen fabric. Here are a few sources for 3 nice looking linens you can order online, at a range of prices. I always suggest getting a sample before you order a large quantity.
