Glass pendants

Deborah Nelson August 8, 2014

Recently I've been noticing a lot of glass pendant fixtures.  They often work well over an island, like the image above, since they don't impede the view.  The ones above are the stamen pendants (from dwr.com), they come in a few colours of glass.

Here are a few more styles I like from Crate & Barrel:

Casual dining areas

Deborah Nelson August 7, 2014

A banquette or bench can be a nice way to create a unique, casual seating area around a table.  This also can be a great way to address an awkward corner, as shown in the above image from Lonny years ago - I've always like this small NYC apartment and how they incorporated a dining area in a very tiny space. Here's another option with a bench (rather than a built in banquette) and a round table.  The colours and patterns used in the fabrics create a very pretty look.

This is another look with built-in seating around the perimeter and the black windows add great drama to the area.

Small bathrooms

Deborah Nelson August 5, 2014

For some reason, I always seem to have homes that have very small bathrooms.  The one shown above is so small that it required the smallest sink I could find.  Luckily I was able to find a tiny vanity that also had a small amount of storage below.  In my opinion, the key to adding storage in a small bathroom is to use the largest medicine cabinet you can fit above the sink.  Or you can add a large wall cabinet like this one. kathleen bathroom inspiration

In another recent renovation I was looking for a very small wall mounted sink. This shot was my inspiration, and I managed to find a sink like this one.  I'll be showing it in a blog post in the next month or so.

I also really liked the look of this sink, however I thought it was a bit too modern looking for my current home.

White textured walls

Deborah Nelson August 4, 2014

These days I'm really crazy about exposed white beams in ceilings, textured white walls and white paneling.  It adds so much  architectural detail to a space.  The room above is a favourite! Here is a much more traditional example of paneling and moulding that I also love.

And the addition of white horizontal boards on walls and ceilings, like these rooms.

today we're on thekitchn.com

Deborah Nelson August 3, 2014

Excited to see my Chester cottage kitchen reno featured on thekitchn.com (of Apartment Therapy) today. This was an easy, inexpensive kitchen update that really just involved taking down a wall and a lot of white paint.  Other than the wall coming down (with proper support beams added to the ceiling).  I was able to do the rest of  the work else myself.  Be sure to check it out here:  http://www.thekitchn.com/kitchen-before-after-a-rundown-cottage-kitchen-gets-a-little-charm-reader-kitchen-remodel-206561 And the original blog post about the kitchen progress is here:  http://www.debnelsondesign.com/?p=1350

Starting to get into the Christmas spirit to be ready for the @ywcahalifax Homes for the Holidays happening November 22-24! A bit of a natural holiday vibe from my place a few seasons back. This year I'll have it decked a little bit more! 🎄🎄🎄 📷:

I used a variety of antiques in this guest room - the bed, chair, blanket and artwork were all items I've collected over time. I love how they add so much character to a room, the antique charcoal sketch above the bed is dated from the 1800’s
