BEFORE & AFTER: PAINTED KITCHEN CABINETS

Deborah Nelson October 24, 2015

I've been a fan of painting kitchen cabinets for many years. I first painted an entire kitchen for a design segment on CBC back many years ago. Since then I've painted a few of my own kitchens too. In the kitchen above, I bought store bought cabinets in a brown wooden finish and I painted them dark grey. It was one of those big box sales, where I could buy all the cabinets for a certain price, so I picked them up because they were very inexpensive. But I didn't like the 'espresso' finish they came in, so I had them installed and set out to change them. At this time most people thought I was crazy to paint brand new cabinets but I had no doubt at all. The cabinets looks like this when I bought them.

I used an oil paint (which you could still buy a few years ago) and had it tinted to match Ralph Lauren Palais Royale.

Here it is right after I painted and have the knobs on but no pulls.

I was really inspired by this image, I liked the dark grey lowers and white uppers.

These cabinets are white, but I've always really liked the style of this kitchen. Definitely has a look I enjoy!

I used a variety of antiques in this guest room - the bed, chair, blanket and artwork were all items I've collected over time. I love how they add so much character to a room, the antique charcoal sketch above the bed is dated from the 1800’s

Open shelving is one of my favourite ways to display those items in your kitchen that are both functional and full of character, like cutting boards, dishes, glassware and even quirky bottle openers 📷: @samsonpix⁣
