DESIGN INSPIRATION: COMFY SLIPCOVERED CHAIRS

Deborah Nelson November 20, 2014
chairs w dn

I've always been a fan of white slipcovered chairs. I find the white cover is easier to keep clean than other colours because you can always add a touch of bleach when washing, if you need to. I have several white slipcovered chairs around, and recently I've seen a few that are slipcovered and have a swivel feature. I have two chairs in a sitting area off my kitchen, there's an amazing ocean view out the window here. The picture above is a close up of the chairs and here is the shot of me sitting in one.

These chairs above are from Ikea and I had the seat cushions filled with down instead of the foam that came with them. This improvement really changed the chairs and made them a lot more comfortable.

Here are a couple of other chairs that I like – with slip covers and they swivel. For this area I have my eye on chairs that swivel since then you can easily face the view out the window or spin around and chat with people in the kitchen. These are a couple I'm looking at.

This is from the Pottery Barn but it's too big for my space.

And these are both options that swivel, from Crate & Barrel.

DIY: UPDATE A COFFEE TABLE

Deborah Nelson November 13, 2014

This little DIY was something I thought would be an easy change. I had this old coffee table and the brushed silver legs were feeling dated and tired. To give the coffee table a new look, I've painted the legs with a metallic paint with a bronze iridescent finish. Here is the BEFORE:

And here is the AFTER. The process of painting the legs might have taken 10 minutes and was very easy to apply. I'm on an antique bronze/brass kick, so I've been painting a few different objects which I will continue to share. I love the results!

ASK DEB NELSON: FURNITURE WITH SLIPCOVERS

Deborah Nelson October 30, 2014

Often people ask me about the best style or colour of furniture for their home. It can be different in every situation, but as many people know, I'm a big fan of slipcovered furniture. I have a sofa, (that you can see above in a white slipcover), but I have several other covers to completely change the look of the piece. I have different colours, fabrics and styles – so depending on the time of year or look I want, I just change the slipcover. I really like slipcovers for a couple of reasons; first they offer you tons of versatility – you don't have to buy a new sofa when you want a completely different look. Also they are really easy to clean, when people say they can't have white furniture, a machine washable white slipcover can really open up a lot of options. You don't have these cleaning choices with an upholstered piece of furniture. If you're looking for a sofa, consider something that is slipcovered if you want something to change up from time to time.

People also ask where to get slipcovers and there are two options. You can buy a sofa that comes with a fitted cover and perhaps buy a cover in more than one fabric or colour, like the Ikea option below. The other option is to buy a sofa that has loose cushions (ie. removable) so you could have a slipcover made for the sofa and all the cushions. This is a more expensive option, you need to buy the slipcover fabric and find an expert to do the work.

Here are a few sofas options.

1.  The Geoffrey from Montauk sofa, these are beautiful, custom made, down filled sofas. They will make the slipcover and you have tons of fabric options.

2.  An Ektorp sofa from Ikea. This is very affordable, so you could consider buying a couple of covers in different colours.

3.  An option for a small sofa from Bouclair for less than $1000

DIY: MAKE ANY TABLE WITH THESE FLOYD LEGS

Deborah Nelson October 27, 2014

I think these Floyd legs are a very smart idea – they attach to any flat surface to create a table. The legs come in two heights (one is for coffee tables and the other is for a desk) and several different colours. The clamps are removable so you can easily move the table, or change the table size or change the type of material in the table. I think it's a stylish look and such a practical idea – a simple DIY that gives you tons of options! The legs can be ordered at thefloydleg.com and they will ship to Canada for an extra cost.

Here are some ideas of what you can make with them, they also now sell brackets to create shelving. One thing they mention is that these are best for mid-weight materials and also aren't meant to be huge dining tables (they can't handle that kind of weight). I hope to be trying out the coffee table legs, using an old thick plank of wood I have. The big decision is what colour leg to go with!

Starting to get into the Christmas spirit to be ready for the @ywcahalifax Homes for the Holidays happening November 22-24! A bit of a natural holiday vibe from my place a few seasons back. This year I'll have it decked a little bit more! 🎄🎄🎄 📷:

I used a variety of antiques in this guest room - the bed, chair, blanket and artwork were all items I've collected over time. I love how they add so much character to a room, the antique charcoal sketch above the bed is dated from the 1800’s
