ASK DEB NELSON: FURNITURE WITH SLIPCOVERS

Deborah Nelson October 30, 2014

Often people ask me about the best style or colour of furniture for their home. It can be different in every situation, but as many people know, I'm a big fan of slipcovered furniture. I have a sofa, (that you can see above in a white slipcover), but I have several other covers to completely change the look of the piece. I have different colours, fabrics and styles – so depending on the time of year or look I want, I just change the slipcover. I really like slipcovers for a couple of reasons; first they offer you tons of versatility – you don't have to buy a new sofa when you want a completely different look. Also they are really easy to clean, when people say they can't have white furniture, a machine washable white slipcover can really open up a lot of options. You don't have these cleaning choices with an upholstered piece of furniture. If you're looking for a sofa, consider something that is slipcovered if you want something to change up from time to time.

People also ask where to get slipcovers and there are two options. You can buy a sofa that comes with a fitted cover and perhaps buy a cover in more than one fabric or colour, like the Ikea option below. The other option is to buy a sofa that has loose cushions (ie. removable) so you could have a slipcover made for the sofa and all the cushions. This is a more expensive option, you need to buy the slipcover fabric and find an expert to do the work.

Here are a few sofas options.

1.  The Geoffrey from Montauk sofa, these are beautiful, custom made, down filled sofas. They will make the slipcover and you have tons of fabric options.

2.  An Ektorp sofa from Ikea. This is very affordable, so you could consider buying a couple of covers in different colours.

3.  An option for a small sofa from Bouclair for less than $1000

BATHROOM ROUND UP: 3 STYLISH & AFFORDABLE SINKS

Deborah Nelson October 29, 2014

Over the years when designing bathrooms, I've looked at many different sinks and vanities. Each bathroom is unique in the style and the size you can fit. In my bathroom above I was fortunate to have the original pedestal sink to use and I love how it looks. The only draw back to a pedestal sink is the lack of storage. I've had lovely vanities custom made for several clients, and lean towards a white vanity with marble tops and nickel faucets – a classic, timeless look for any bathroom. These vanities (shown below) are some store bought options, and two even come with marble tops. All you have to do is make sure it fits, buy a faucet and get the plumbing hooked up. Retailers seem to have a better selection to buy off the floor, and there are a variety of styles and sizes. These are 3 I think are stylish and affordable:

1.  Pedro 60" vanity with double sink and marble top/backsplash for less than $800, doesn't include the faucets but comes with everything else, for a double vanity this is a great price. From costco.ca

2.  Malaga 27" vanity – comes with everything except faucet $519 marble top and backsplash.  From rona.ca

3.  Hemnes white sink, 31-1/2" – this doesn't have a marble top or faucet, but comes with white sink for $299. I'd personally add on two back legs.  From ikea.ca

DIY: MAKE ANY TABLE WITH THESE FLOYD LEGS

Deborah Nelson October 27, 2014

I think these Floyd legs are a very smart idea – they attach to any flat surface to create a table. The legs come in two heights (one is for coffee tables and the other is for a desk) and several different colours. The clamps are removable so you can easily move the table, or change the table size or change the type of material in the table. I think it's a stylish look and such a practical idea – a simple DIY that gives you tons of options! The legs can be ordered at thefloydleg.com and they will ship to Canada for an extra cost.

Here are some ideas of what you can make with them, they also now sell brackets to create shelving. One thing they mention is that these are best for mid-weight materials and also aren't meant to be huge dining tables (they can't handle that kind of weight). I hope to be trying out the coffee table legs, using an old thick plank of wood I have. The big decision is what colour leg to go with!

CHARMING WINDOWS

Deborah Nelson September 29, 2014
Deb Nelson third floor

I love old windows in houses, especially any of the swing open version. I'm fortunate to have some of this style in my own house – they add so much charm and character. The windows I have are all very unique and are custom sizes that fit specific areas. Here are a few of my favourite, opened on a hot summer day nothing beats the ocean breeze!

BOOKCASES

Deborah Nelson September 26, 2014

I love a room with books. I have a nice custom bookcase in my den that my cousin Mike built with some refurbished pieces from the original house. The hardware and door came from another built-in cabinet that was in the house before the reno. Here is another shot of the full bookcase. I think books add charm and character to a room. Also it's nice to have them around for guests to read and people to look through when they're visiting. In this digital age it's nice to still pick up a book from time to time.

I realized my own design 'inspiration file' has many rooms with bookcases. These are just a sample of some of my favourites!

Starting to get into the Christmas spirit to be ready for the @ywcahalifax Homes for the Holidays happening November 22-24! A bit of a natural holiday vibe from my place a few seasons back. This year I'll have it decked a little bit more! 🎄🎄🎄 📷:

I used a variety of antiques in this guest room - the bed, chair, blanket and artwork were all items I've collected over time. I love how they add so much character to a room, the antique charcoal sketch above the bed is dated from the 1800’s
